Chiropractic Care During and After Pregnancy

Chiropractic care and pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time of change and growth for both mom and baby.  It is a time to be enjoyed and relished as a precious new life is formed and brought into the world.

Your chiropractor is an integral part of this process as they can provide you and your growing family with the resources you need to optimize the health of you and your baby. Your chiropractor will give you the knowledge and understanding you and your family need as you embark upon this great miracle of birth.

For Mom
During pregnancy a woman’s body goes though many changes.  As baby grows, postural changes take place, and ligaments change and relax as a hormones are released to prepare the body for birth.  As these changes occur, many women experience low back, pelvic, or sciatic pain. Regular chiropractic care can help to alleviate these low back and pelvic problems, and can help to optimize function by balancing bony pelvic structures, muscles, and ligaments.  In addition to relieving some of the aches and pains of pregnancy, researchers have found that regular chiropractic care during pregnancy can significantly reduce labor times, the need for medical interventions during labor, and recovery time.

For Baby
Chiropractic care helps to optimize the development of your baby by removing interference to the mother’s nervous system thereby allowing baby the room it needs to develop and grow properly.  As well, chiropractic care allows the baby to obtain the proper positioning for labor, allowing both mom and baby to have a more efficient and less invasive labor.

After birth
Chiropractic care can be continued for both mom and baby soon after the birth has taken place.  For mom this is a means of relieving the stress that labor has placed on her body, and regaining proper function and stability of the pelvis, supporting ligaments, and muscles.

Baby can also be adjusted soon after birth.  The birthing process puts many stresses and strains on the nervous system, joints, muscles, and ligaments of the emerging infant.  Adjustments to newborns contain only ounces of force and are designed to facilitate health and remove nerve system interference thus creating an optimal condition for the growth and development of your new baby.

Why do Children need Chiropractic Care?
A child’s spine develops rapidly in the first decade of life and many things can affect its development.  In the infant, things such as falls from a bed or change table, sudden stops in a vehicle, sudden unsupported head movement, or even the birthing process itself can affect how the spine grows and develops.  As they continue to develop children commonly bump into things, have falls, or hit their heads, especially at milestones such as when learning to walk.  All of these incidents, which may seem insignificant at the time, can lead to spinal problems.

How do I know if my Child should be checked?
Often times it is difficult for parents to determine if their child has a spinal problem. Many parents choose to have their children checked by a chiropractor on a regular basis as a preventative measure, and as a means to improve their child’s overall health and function.

The following things can indicate that the child may have a problem and should be checked by a chiropractor:

  • Feeding problems in a young infant
  • An infant that will only feed from one breast
  • Sleeping difficulties
  • Colic
  • Bed wetting
  • Persistent ear aches
  • Headaches
  • Growing pains
  • Torticollis
  • Scoliosis
  • Autism
  • ADD & ADHD

How can chiropractic help?
Spinal adjustments in the infant and young child are extremely gentle and are aimed at relieving nerve interference in the child’s spine and restoring proper motion in the spinal segment.  It is important to note that chiropractors do not treat childhood diseases; they instead focus on removing nerve interference thereby promoting the healthy function of all body systems.
